Diminuative Damsel in Distress (or How to Get Your Grandfather to do the Impossible :)

My daughter is a free spirit. Not much gets her down, or scares her and so extra vigilance is the order of the day when out and about. Her Vó-Vó and Vô-Vô know that and tend to stick to tried and true play areas. One of them is the local marina and it's shore walk path. BUT, they didn't account for the fact that the last time they'd gone, it was fall, Malía wasn't yet 2 years old- she was shorter, she wasn't as strong, certain "distractions" weren't accessible to her.

Fast forward to yesterday.

They're walking the path, and at the turn around, instead of heading back, as usual, Malía begins to walk toward the big jungle gym, shaped like a boat, just off to the left. It's enormous, and she'd never showed much interest in it, beyond watching the bigger kids play on it, before, but this time she's intent on trying it herself.
No one's on it to knock her down, or shake the areas that "rock", so my parents let her go. She climbs the stairs, walks the platforms, then up the ladders, crawls through a bunch of big plastic tubes, and out onto the "bird's nest" look out. Suddenly, she looks out and sees my parents down below- waaaay down below. She promptly plops herself down.
My parents call to her. They coax her to come back the way she came.
Nuh uh.
Instead, she calmly sits there.
They try again to coax her down.
And then the dreaded word: He'p!
Help? My parents don't know whether to laugh, or cry. She looks so sweet just sitting there, calling for help, and she's not in any danger, there is no way she can fall with the slats as tall as she, but how the heck are they going to get her DOWN? There is literally no one around.
Then, the sky starts to cloud over and the wind picks up a little. Oh crap, rain is coming and Malía is not budging, period.
They call to her again, promise ice cream.
She switches tactics and starts to call for help in Portuguese.
That does it, my 75 year old father begins the climb. My mother says she almost peed herself watching him, she was trying soooo hard not to bust out laughing at his legs amnd arms out wide trying to balance, at how petrified, yet determined, he looked.
When he gets to the tubing, he tries again to get Mal to come to HIM.
She looks him straight in the eye (from several feet away, mind you) and says the magic words, "Vô-Vô, I scar't. He'p me. Ajuda-me."
He did.
Together they got to solid ground.
And, in the next second guess who wanted to do it all AGAIN?
No, NOT my dad! LOL

LOL. What a guy! Sweet, sweet Malia.

Hard to picture it but my dad would be 73 now. I imagine he would have done the same thing.
